Connecting in the Time of Corona

How are you? What was once a standard greeting, usually followed by a hollow “good,” is now so loaded. It’s hard to have a conversation that isn’t just about the pandemic and yet, it’s so important to also acknowledge everything else going on as well as find moments of joy.

With the Instagram Story random question filter as inspiration, my parents and I spent some time after dinner one night answering random questions. It led to a lot of laughs, learning so much about each other, and some much-needed moments of normalcy. (Although as my dad keeps saying, “What is normal?”)

In case you’re looking for ice breakers to jazz up your quarantine conversations, here are a few of my current favorites: (I’ve added my answers in bold.)

  • What made you laugh this week? Watching my mom try to exit out of TikTok.

  • What’s your current favorite meal? Soba noodles with peanut sauce and veggies.

  • If you could be any animal for a day, which would you choose and why? One of my friend Dale’s dogs. They are adorable and fills their days with walks, snuggles, and playtime.

  • What would be your walk-on song? I’ve been trying to answer this question for years. Currently: “This is What You Came For” by Calvin Harris ft. Rihanna.

Let me know if you use any of these and leave your answers in the comments!
